Why green waste piles up in Manchester gardens
The council green bin is fine for a mow and a tidy, but it is 240 litres collected fortnightly, and one laurel hedge laughs at that. Manchester gardens, especially the long plots in Chorlton, Didsbury and Burnage, produce serious volume the moment you actually cut anything back.
The alternative is the tip, and that means bagging it, booking a slot, and doing four runs in a car that smells of grass for a week. Garden waste is also heavier than it looks. A dozen rubble sacks of wet soil is a genuine lifting job.

Spring hedge reductions are the big one. Someone in Withington cuts the privet for the first time in three years and ends up with a wall of trimmings taller than the fence. We bag or grab the lot and it is gone the same day.
End of tenancy garden tidy-ups run a close second, especially around Fallowfield and Withington where student houses turn over in summer. Landlords want the jungle gone before viewings, and we clear green waste, old furniture and the broken shed in one visit.
Then there are the one-off projects: lifting a lawn to replace it, digging out raised beds, or finally dealing with the corner where everything has been dumped since 2015. These are half green waste and half everything else, and we sort it as we load so the compostable material stays clean.
What happens to your green waste
Green waste is one of the few waste streams with a genuinely happy ending. It goes to a licensed composting facility where it is shredded, heaped and turned. Over a few weeks it breaks down, gets screened to remove contaminants, and comes out the other end as soil improver used in landscaping and agriculture.
That only works if the load is clean, which is why we keep green waste separate. A plastic pot or a bit of fencing in the pile does not sound like much, but it is exactly what composting sites screen out, and contaminated loads get diverted to general disposal at higher cost.
Timber from fences and sheds goes down a different route, usually to be chipped for panel board or biomass. Either way, very little from a garden clearance ends up in landfill, and we are happy to tell you where a specific load is going.
Getting a quote without a site visit
Photos are genuinely enough for most green waste jobs. A couple of shots of the pile, one showing access to the garden, and a note about whether anything is unusually heavy like soil or rubble, and we can price it.
What changes the price is volume and effort, not the day of the week. Loose brash we can grab is quicker than material buried under other rubbish, and a front drive pile is quicker than a third-floor balcony. Be as accurate as you can with the photos and the quote we give is the price you pay.
Bigger clearances, a full garden strip-out or an overgrown rental, are still photo-quotable most of the time, but if we think we need to see it we will say so and pop round. We are in Manchester daily so it is rarely a delay.
