Why the paperwork is worth caring about
Manchester City Council takes fly-tipping seriously and enforcement has got sharper. Under duty of care, if waste from your address turns up dumped on a lane in Gorton, the council traces it back to you. Producing a transfer note with a registered carrier's number on it ends the conversation there.
That matters most for landlords between tenants, trades finishing a job, and anyone running a shop or unit. A cheap van quoted over the phone with no licence number is not a saving, it's a risk you're carrying on someone else's behalf.

Your duty of care does not end at the kerb
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, whoever produces the waste keeps a legal responsibility for where it ends up. Hand your old kitchen to a van with no licence, and if it turns up dumped on a lane in Wythenshawe with an envelope in it, the fine follows your address, not theirs. Householders can be fined for failing to check, and businesses are held to a stricter standard again.

What happens to a load after it leaves your street
Nothing goes straight to landfill from the van. Every load is tipped at a licensed transfer station where it's sorted by material: timber, metals, plasterboard, hardcore, green waste, cardboard and general residual.
Timber is chipped for board or biomass, metals are baled and sold on, clean rubble is crushed for aggregate and green waste is composted. Fridges and freezers go to a dedicated processor because of the gases in the coolant circuit and the insulation foam, which is why they're handled separately from other appliances.
