Getting a fridge out of a Manchester house
It's rarely the fridge that's the problem, it's the route. Victorian terraces in Levenshulme have a tight turn at the bottom of the stairs, city centre apartments need a lift booked with the concierge, and Didsbury semis often have an integrated unit screwed into the run of units. We do this daily, so we arrive expecting it.
Retailers will sometimes take the old one when they deliver a new one, but only if it's disconnected, emptied and standing free by the door on the right day. When that doesn't line up, or the fridge died months before the replacement arrived, we pick up the slack.

Fridges are legally different to other appliances
A fridge or freezer isn't just a heavy box. The cooling circuit and the insulation foam contain gases that are controlled under WEEE and ozone-depleting substance rules, which is why they can't simply be tipped with general waste or crushed at a normal transfer station.
They have to go to a facility that degasses them under controlled conditions before the shell is stripped for metals and plastics. That processing carries a real cost, and it's the reason a fridge is priced differently to, say, a washing machine.
It's also the reason abandoned fridges are such a common sight on Manchester back lanes. If someone quotes you almost nothing to take one away, the maths only works if it never reaches a proper processor. Ours do, and we can put it in writing on a transfer note.
Practical bits before we arrive
Defrost it if you can. A freezer that's been switched off the night before is lighter and, more importantly, isn't going to drip its way down your hall carpet. If there wasn't time, tell us and we'll bring extra sheeting.
Empty the contents and take out loose shelves and drawers, which travel better separately and stop the door swinging on the stairs. Leave the door closed and unlatched rather than taped shut so we can get a grip on it.
Access is the thing to flag. American style fridge freezers rarely come back out the way they went in without the door coming off, and galley kitchens in city centre flats can be tighter than the appliance.
