Why mattresses cause so much hassle in Manchester
Manchester's bulky waste routes are slow and limited, and the household tips need a booked slot with a car that can actually hold a king size. Most people can't, so the mattress ends up propped in the hallway, out in the yard getting soaked, or in the back alley where it becomes a fly-tip with your address attached.
Student turnover around Withington and Fallowfield makes it worse every summer, and landlords replacing beds between tenancies hit the same wall. One phone call and a van solves what a week of good intentions doesn't.
We're family-run from Stockport and out in Manchester daily, so it's a quick job to fold into the round. Every quote is job-specific, so send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll price it before we set off.
Why mattresses are the awkward one
A mattress is the item people try hardest to deal with themselves and give up on quickest. It doesn't fold, it doesn't fit in a hatchback, it soaks up rain in an hour if you leave it in the yard, and the council bulky round wants it at the kerb before they arrive.
They're also the item most often fly-tipped in Manchester, which is exactly why an unmarked van offering to take one for cash is a bad bet. If it ends up on a back lane in Moston with your street's name on the delivery label still stapled to it, the letter comes to you.
We take it from the bedroom, not the pavement. Double, king, super king, divan bases, bunk frames and the odd sofa bed that weighs more than the wardrobe. We bag or sheet it on the way out so nothing marks the walls on a tight staircase.
Where Manchester mattresses actually go
Mattresses are banned from being crushed into general landfill loads by most transfer stations because the springs damage plant. They go to a dedicated processor instead, where the cover is cut off, the foam and fibre layers are pulled out and the spring unit is separated for scrap steel.
Foam gets shredded for carpet underlay, fibre goes to insulation and textile reuse, and the steel is recycled like any other metal. It's one of the better recycling stories in the trade, but it only happens if the mattress reaches a site that handles them.
That specialist handling is part of why mattress collection is priced per item and per job rather than lumped in with general waste. Numbers matter too: one from a spare room is a different job to eleven out of an HMO in Rusholme. Send a photo with a rough count and we'll come back with a fixed price.
