Older Manchester housing was not built with modern furniture in mind. Getting furniture out of a Manchester house
The hard part is almost never the van. It's the turn at the top of a Victorian staircase, the bay window that means the front room door only opens ninety degrees, or the corner sofa that was built in the living room and has never left it.
We come as a two-person crew with straps, sack barrows, blankets and tools, so a bed frame or a flat-pack wardrobe that won't fit through the door gets broken down rather than forced through it. Doors come off hinges and go back on. Bannisters and stairwells get sheeted.
If you're in a block, tell us the floor, whether there's a lift and whether it needs booking. Ancoats and city centre buildings often want a loading bay slot and a goods lift reservation, and half an hour of admin beforehand saves an hour of standing about on the day.
Reuse first, recycling second
A surprising amount of what people call rubbish is still perfectly usable. Solid wood furniture, dining sets, working office chairs and clean upholstered pieces with fire labels intact get set aside for reuse where the condition allows, rather than being broken up for the sake of it.
What can't be reused gets stripped at a licensed transfer station. Timber is chipped, metal frames and mechanisms are baled for scrap, foam and fabric are separated out. Very little of a wardrobe needs to be landfilled if it's taken apart properly.
Because furniture varies so much in volume and weight, every job is priced individually. One armchair from a ground floor flat in Chorlton and a four bedroom house of furniture in Didsbury are not the same van. Send photos of the pieces and we'll give you one fixed price for the lot.
